Australian surgeon, Craig Jurisevic, gazes in horror at images on television at home in Adelaide, generated by the unfolding Serbian invasion of Kosovo in 1998. The ethnic cleansing of this primitive region of the former Yugoslavia recalls the hell that Craigs grandfather had survived in the Nazi death camps of World War II. A call for trained surgeons to assist in the medical crisis of the Kosovo battlefields sents Craig on a journey that will conjure nightmares for years to come. Operating in primitive conditions on the fringe of firefights, Craig is witness to the worst of what human beings can inflict on each other. Maddened by scenes of massacre and torture, Craig abandons his non-combatant status and fights beside the guerrillas of the Kosovar Liberation Army against the hardened Serbian army. The wounds he strives to repair in the operating theatre mirror the wounds he inflicts with his Kalashnikov. When NATO's intervention on the side of the Kosovars brings the war to an end, Craig returns to his wife and family in Australia shattered not only by what he has seen, but by what he has done.
