1914 was a year of colour, romance, movement and variety. It was the year that Europe, already in rapid transition, violently shifted from the glories and glamour of the Edwardian era to the tragedy of war. From the ballrooms of London, Paris, Vienna and St. Petersburg to the fields of Flanders, the fates of grandees and ordinary people, Catastrophe: 1914 surveys the year that shaped the war, and thereafter the world. On land and sea, through Sarajevo to Mons, Marne and Tannenberg, bestselling author of ALL HELL LET LOOSE Max Hastings examines the formative sacrifices, follies and misfortunes that left Europe facing a horrific pattern of attrition. A panoramic view of the societies behind the front lines, this is a story of Kings and corporals, of Britain and Germany, Russia and Turkey. It is a record of human experience, of how society looked before June 28th 1914, and how it felt after its shattering.
